The flames went up and then it was totally dark again.

Summer solstice is one of the biggest Latvian celebrations, when people say farewell to long days and short nights. From this day on, nights are gonna get longer and longer taking away our precious daylight. So Latvians are having
bigger or smaller fire and lots of beer until sun rises. And this was the reason, why I didn't post for two days.

I love this picture of the huge bonfire.

Oh, is this the bonfire that you and your friends made to mark the passing of the longest day? It is a little sad that the days are just going to get shorter until the other solstice.

Lordy lordy lordy....what was your burning up? Firewood? seems like a waste of something. Nice photo though.

I guess Midsummer becomes more important the farther north you are. As far as I know it isn’t subject to any particular festivities around the Mediterranean. Some fellow Swedish visitors to a conference in Spain some years back were surprised that the conference actually continued on Friday of that week. Back home it was a day off, as usual...

The bonfire in my picture is taken from a great distance - from a watchtower few hundred meters away from it. This was the biggest I saw in the area. Of course it is impressive, but I agree that it's a waste in some way, still if it really makes someone HAPPY, why not to warm up their hearts!

That's interesting. In the summer, we have longer days and shorter nights.

I woke up last night at 4:30 AM and it was already bright outside.

I noticed that lately your post were after sundown photos. They are excellent pictures in my opinion. Keep them coming.
