Latvian Song and Dance Celebration (3rd post)

Latvian Song and Dance Celebration normally is held every five years and it is a major event in Latvia. The first Latvian Song and Dance Celebration was launched in year 1873 as a manifestation of awareness of Latvian National identity that was oppressed before that for 700 years since Crusaders invaded Latvian territories. Despite oppressive Soviet regime they were held on regular basis since started.

Labrit Aigars et al,

Thank you for sharing this wonderful heritage and the heart of Latvija.

It is amazing to see how the pride and to feel the energy showing through the festival.

It made me proud to be Latvian (even though biologically I am not.....).

The challenge is how to transform this energy and belonging into the power to drive Latvia to a new height (if that is indeed the will and want of the people)..

Keep up the wonderful posting/ archiving of 'Latvianism' on the internet.

Good lord, that's the biggest number of people in one photo I've ever seen in 2 years of DP-ing!!! Interesting story, too. Did the celebration continue during the Soviet reign?
