Flag of Turkey

The current design of the Turkish flag is directly derived from the late Ottoman flag, which had acquired its final form in 1844. It is known that the Ottomans used red flags of triangular shape at least since 1383.

Bolderaja lighthouse

A lighthouse in Bolderaja across the river Daugava right before entering Riga bay. There is no use of colours this time, because the lighthouse is black and white.

Brick

In latvian slang we use to call a sign like this a brick. Just because it reminds one. The meaning though is recognized worldwide as driving forbidden.

To be free

We value the freedom and ideas of independence of our nation. We - the latvians would like to say, we have our own country as a nation. Although in reality it might seem different. Anyway 18th of November (back in 1918.) will always be our independance day - for a memory, for a dream.

Staro Riga demonstrates a spectacular projection on the walls of the house in Old Riga where Embassy of Italy is settled. This is ment to be the Odissey of dreams.

Snow is coming and going at his time. It is too warm to stay on ground, but cold enough to snow.

RIga skyline

If you are a lover of flat skylines - Riga is the place for you. I would say at least 99% of buildings are 5 floors high or lower.

Remembrance day

Today is the remembrance day of latvian soldiers-freedom fighters. Lighting up a candle on Riga castle wall is a way of expressing honour of a decent latvian patriot. To take a closer look, jump to 360cities here.

Latvian Society in Riga began its activity in 1868. Among people who established it were Kr. Barons and Kr. Valdemārs who have done (not exagerating) huge amount of research. The subjects they looked into were Latvian language, history, folklore, education...

Autumn

Did you know that in Europe leaves tend to be yellow while in North America they tend to be red, and there is a reason why? In NA apparently the red colour developed to repel certain insects, while in Europe it was not necessary because many of then were killed in last Ice Age.
