Tower (in Latvian - tornis) in Old English was called "torr", meaning high structure - from Latin turris.
Possibly linked to Etruscan verb turan "to rule" and later tyrant (in Latvian - tirāns).
In other words - a tyrannical structure ruling over Riga skyline.

FYI, Latvian "tornis" is borrowed from Germanic languages (Swedish "torn", modern German "turm"), ulimately from Latin (turris) and Greek (tyrsis). The relations with "tyrant" is possible, but rather distant.

This is what I said (origin is latin turris) and also pointed out linkage from latin to english lng.
