Project Z- towers, Z-torņi.

Tower (in Latvian - tornis) in Old English was called "torr", meaning high structure - from Latin turris.
Possibly linked to Etruscan verb turan "to rule" and later tyrant (in Latvian - tirāns).

In other words - a tyrannical structure ruling over Riga skyline.

Teikas Nami

This new Lithuanian investment development is again - very empty. Looks good from the outside. My theory is that all these new empty developments were made deliberately - not sure who for. If they wont be used, then it is a LOT of wasted resources.

Before the work

The new building of Rietumu (West) bank on Vesetas str. Well it was new few years ago.

Concrete centre

"Rietumu" means West Capital Centre. That grass shouldn't be here! Really too much grass.

Glass&concrete fits each other

Both buildings look skewed, although only one of them really is. Barrel distortion plays its role. The old highrise, which definitely stands straight, is the Ministry of Agriculture. Right beside is Centra Nams - discussed in media as one of the architecture failures in Riga.

Jugla

Jugla is one of the neighborhoods (micro regions - mikrorajoni in Latvian). It starts off on Brivibas boulevard with couple of mid-rises that have magnificent views from top floors over the Shmerlis (Smerlis) forest.

Near new high rises policemen were stopping literally every biker to make sure he has a drivers licence with corresponding category and "face control" after which they decided to do the alco test or set the rider free :)

See what I meant in my previous post? Imanta neighborhood is a good example of commie block widespread architecture in Riga and really everywhere in Eastern Europe.

Kipsala

On the left this is a South end of Kipsala island. Currently there are two high rises, three under construction and few more approved. In Riga this will be a so called "Small Manhattan". Surely it is nothing special if compared to world "megapolices", but it is nice to see our City developing.

Reality

Even though we would not want to know anything about it, for many people everyday reality is digging through rubbish containers. Nevertheless, yesterday I saw a video interview with some tramps - they proudly declared that their everyday diet is slightly out of date salmons and Baileys.

Skanstes Virsotnes (Peaks)

Another nearly finished building from new Riga business and residential area on Skanstes street (remember the Rietumu Banka with helipad). Here you can buy a flat in one of the four 24-floor high-rises with the view to the Old Riga towers.

Helipad

Strangely enough this is a helipad under construction literally in the middle of the City centre. Who considers it necessary? It is Rietumu Banka (West Bank) new high-rise complex:)
