In Riga suburbs you will find all sorts of soviet "artistic footprints".

Soviet building

Riga has many standard so called commie blocks, however there are some odd exceptions in communism architecture.

Sound proof

This is one thing you can see very often in Western Europe - sound proof walls on roads to prevent noise pollution. In Latvia I have seen them so far only on recently built South Bridge.

New commies

These are another new commies I like. Built in Plavnieki outskirts - better than the old Soviet ones.

Brick and stone

Talking about the past - this was once a posh quarter in the city centre. It dies not look bad - it is out of date. I keep wondering if it will become very valuable one day. Like cars - at some point they lose the value...but wait a decade and the value goes up again and continues commme sa:)

See what I meant in my previous post? Imanta neighborhood is a good example of commie block widespread architecture in Riga and really everywhere in Eastern Europe.

Sun set in Suburbs

Massive blocks of panel apartments are built around Riga central area. They are built in a much less denser manner than central buildings. They say that one reason for it was to provide undisturbed access to the infrastructure in a case buildings will collapse due to military activity.

If you think that these four twelve storey commie block “high rises” on the right bank of Daugava in Kengargs are sort of exclusive you might be wrong. The location is excellent though the architecture doesn’t attract the buyers that much because they have drawbacks like no soundproofing, no insulation and windows are half rotten except if owners have saved enough money to replace them and improve energy efficiency there. The photo was taken from drainpipe stretching some 10 meters into the water. There was no stench, so I guess the pipe was not a sewerage outlet.
