Moto season 2009 opening

The opening of moto season in Riga gathered thousands of bikers. This is a view from Salu bridge towards TV tower on 25th of April before the caravan went through Riga to Jurmala.

LuLū Pica on Deglava street

American cars are relatively rare in Riga and Latvia... so... here we go.

You can see the most popular Pizza delivery vehicle - Pica Lulū, in the top right corner of the pic.

Tuesday 28 April 2009

The first summer day

Hot hot hot - the "summer like" weather has reached Riga.

Monday 27 April 2009

Flu

Today's theme - swine+human+bird flu - what a mess... just like the graffiti. I hope it does not spread too much. Wear the mask - I'm off to the drug store.

Please Google "swine flu" until its too late.

Statue in Plavnieki

I have no idea what the hell is this. You can see it in google maps here.

Saturday 25 April 2009

No escape

A quick snap through the car window of prison like highrise - just look at the size of windows.

Friday 24 April 2009

Symetric

Birch getting green on Valdemara street near Alojas street.

Consumer society

The most frequent phrase in a society that fills the inner emptiness with lots of goods probably is "Next please...".

Tuesday 21 April 2009

Commies

Soviet time high rises and the far end of Pļavnieki neighborhood. There is a new high rise project coming up just behind these ones - called Solevile, I guess.

Monday 20 April 2009

Purvciems

Waiting in the Bus Stop in a sunny, but chilly morning

Sunday 19 April 2009

Traffic

As summer is approaching - here is a green-leaf pic form last August from Kalnceima bridge towards Ķīpsala island.

Saturday 18 April 2009

Mezaparks

I'm not sure what this building is for in Mezaparks - I suspect it is a tennis court.

Friday 17 April 2009

Kapteiņa Enriko Pulkstenis

"The watch of Captain Enrico" - it is a name of a Latvian film and a restaurant in a quite and luxury area on Antonijas street.

Thursday 16 April 2009

Natālijas Draudziņas Vidusskola (ģimnāzija)

It used to be called Riga 7th Secondary School. Ironically the Last name of Nataly is Draudzina - that means "of a friend". So I remember when I heard the new name of the school, I mised the "s" at the end and thought it means "A School for Nataly's friend".

It could be interpreted even differently, but I'll leave that pleasure to the fellow Latvians.

Wednesday 15 April 2009

Aitiņlauvas

Its a roadside coffee shop just outside Riga on Liepaja (pronounced Liepaya) highway. The sign has extraordinary name - it translates as SHEEPLIONS.

Tuesday 14 April 2009

Tree

I have no idea what this tree is called. It certainly is not native to Latvian flora.

Monday 13 April 2009

Duntes iela (street)

Duntes street over the last few decades from an empty road connecting Riga centre to Sarkandaugava area has become a popular location for companies operating in shopping, office, residential buildings (Duntes Ozoli - the highrise behind the blue building) or entertainment industries.

The note below is directly related to me any other blogger as it attempts to censor the internet.

To see the warning letter from Goldman Sachs to blogger Mike Morgan that threatens to take him to court, if he does not shut his website down click here.

Saturday 11 April 2009

Skyline

The Albert Hotel Sky Bar provides rare views of the city. The high rises in Riga are very scattered, however from this perspective we can see 6 very high buildings - 2xPanorma Plaza, Swedbank, Preses Nams, Vansu Bridge, Ministry of Agriculture.

Friday 10 April 2009

Mezaparks

The last time I was riding a horse I was 10 I guess. When was the last time you did?

Thursday 9 April 2009

Vines...

... up to 6 floors high. Will become a green wall very soon.

Wednesday 8 April 2009

Eastern highway

Behind the wall is a road and a flyover bridge is u/c.

Monday 6 April 2009

Salt&Pepper

Before leaving Riga by airplane, you might want to have a good meal in LIDO. It is closer to the sky by the way - on the second floor. O-ou, one more forbidden photo was taken.

Sunday 5 April 2009

Stop

Kalnciema street bus stop just before the Kalnciema bridge.

Saturday 4 April 2009

All Saints

An Orthodox church of all Saints, that was built in 1815 near one of the oldest cemetery in Riga. Weird, but the address is Katolu str. 10 (Catholic str.)

Friday 3 April 2009

Remulus & Remus

I just do not know, why this is here in the driveway underneath Salu bridge and who can notice it here. Maybe tram passangers?

Thursday 2 April 2009

Enchanced old and new

So the spring is here with sun that not only melts the last remains of snow, but also enchances colours of new and old.

Wednesday 1 April 2009

Iznomā

Shopping streets with empty windows and signs IZNOMĀ (to let) pop up like mushrooms after rain.
